Reaganomics is dead?

Quote:
Workers Vote For A New Economic Agenda

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- America's workers had clear alternatives on economic policy on November 4, and gave a mandate to a progressive agenda for bottom-up, worker-driven economic growth, according to a post-election analysis released during a news conference today by Change to Win.

"Anxiety over the economy framed this election - but it was hope and optimism for the future that determined the votes of workers," said Change to Win chair Anna Burger. "We won the election, now we will change the country."

Young workers in overwhelming numbers rejected the traditional Reagan-era Republican economic nostrums of unregulated corporate power, tax cuts for the wealthy and slashing of government programs in their decisive support for president-elect Barack Obama.

"Young workers envision a new American Dream based on respect for their work, living wages, a health care system focused on healthy lives rather than corporate profits, and a green and energy independent economy," continued Burger.

Lake Research Partners president Celinda Lake said results from her election survey of working voters signal the death of Reaganomics, and the beginning of a new era of voter support for positive government to promote the American Dream.

"There has been a complete change in how people view the role of government," said Lake. "The majority of workers no longer believe that government is the problem, they believe it must be part of the solution, marking the end of the Reagan era."

[...]

Tom Woodruff, director of the Change to Win Strategic Organizing Center, stressed the need for action now. "We must pass the Employee Free Choice Act. As the percentage of workers in unions has declined so have wages and benefits. Corporations and CEOs have used their tremendous power to threaten, coerce, intimidate and fire workers for trying to form a union. It is a fact that workers in unions earn on average almost a third more and are almost two-thirds more likely to have health and retirement benefits. Unions are an economic recovery program," said Woodruff.

I've never heard unions described as an economic recovery program before.

Well, sure, unions create jobs. Once workers are unionized, you have to pay fifteen people to do the jobs of ten. That's five new jobs right there. :kookoo:

I'd be most interested in hearing the theory behind this. As far as I can see, economic growth comes from the owners of businesses, mostly small businesses, taking risks and investing money, time and hard work.

But then I'm an evil capitalist, so what do I know?

Isn't it odd how "worker driven" economics can only happen once evil capitalist employers already have invested in things like factories and equipment?

If a bunch of workers got together and decided to pool their resources and buy some capital equipment, they'd presto chango become evil capitalists.

Great. Young people are somehow under the impression that they should be getting $50K just to walk out of school. It'll be great to have the economy geared toward their expectations, especially after they get all that free college.

On the positive side, Obie's gonna tax the body fluids out of 'em, so it'll be cool to see them get what they thought they wanted.

Yep, and here's why.

The 'Trophy Kids' Go to Work

My niece just graduated from college, and is a big Obama supporter. She did work during college, mostly low paying jobs, so she hasn't really seen the tax bite yet. Under Obama's tax plan, my sister would've had a much harder time affording to help her with tuition and school expenses. There may be a lot of college kids in for a big surprise when their parents suddenly can't afford to send them to school anymore.

GOOOOOD!!!! Because a) the little snots ran all over W&M singing hosannas for the Messiah, b) I pay cash for my college tuition, and c) I have a habit of grading myself against how well everyone else did. Less competition equals more self-esteem.

Maybe there will be a lot of young folks that'll be hit with a big, cold bucketful of reality very soon.

They will... but buckets tend to splash.

Yes, that's the unfortunate thing: the collateral damage. The Law of Unintended Consequences doesn't stop working just because Democrats control the government.

Team Obama sells T-shirts to raise funds for DNC
By Sam Youngman
Posted: 11/10/08 04:50 PM [ET]

[...]

An e-mail from Obama for America to supporters went out Monday afternoon offering commemorative T-shirts for sale for $30 to help ease the Democratic National Committee's debts.

The e-mail informed supporters that Obama is committed to bringing change to the country, but “first we need to get our house in order,” adding that the DNC with its 50-state strategy took on “considerable debt” in helping Obama get elected. The president-elect shattered every fundraising record on his march to the White House.

[...]

The blue T-shirts feature a picture of Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden, with the date Nov. 4, 2008 and the words "Change can happen" on the front. On the back, the shirts read “We are one nation, we are one people. Our time for change has come.”

Barry doesn't have any extra cash left over to donate to the DNC himself? :confz:
